I was there and sadly U2 were not. The 4th overseas act was a one hit reggae/ska band called the Jo-Boxers.
ReplyDeleteI was there, but sadly was to far gone by the time Talking heads was on, to remember much of them. Chrissie Hines was amazing, her voice cut right through you. Best Female vocalist, I have seen live. W.W
ReplyDeleteyou missed Talking Heads?? OMG that must suck!!!
DeleteSure did suck; I learnt not to get too wasted at concerts the hard way.
DeleteI was there and loved the show...
DeleteThe other band was the Eurythmics , and they were excellent .. Annie Lennox was on fire that nite
ReplyDeletewow was she ever, it is burned into my memory. It started pissing with rain and she came on & sang 'Here Comes The Rain' aaaargghhh .... mud slides everywhere.
DeleteSweetwaters, Feb 1984 in Pukekawa, NZ
YES.. WOW. Thanks for the memory jog..!.
DeleteRemember lots of mud, can fight on the hill, hari krisna food tent, catching Annie Lennoxs sweat shirt, not getting my end away.
ReplyDeleteI was there and U2 and Eurythmics sadly were not...
ReplyDeleteTalking Heads were awesome! David Byrne walking on stage in zoot suit and ghetto blaster, what an intro to "Phsyco Killer"! "Burning down the House" was stunning.
Was front stage right when he come on , exactly as you said..Still remember like it was yesterday
DeleteYes I remember Physco Killer!!! that still sends chills through me. The rain... the mud... after falling over so many times no one cared. I was front left in the huge pools of sludge. And the can fights looked like swarming bees. Best times and memories
DeleteYeah I couldn't remember Eurythmics being there ... Joboxers were great and of course Talking Heads, Pretenders. My first big concert - blown away.
DeleteF-ing awesome!
DeleteI was wondering how the hell I got U2 listed here, but just found an earlier poster with them listed.
ReplyDeleteYes they were supposed to be there, but they pulled out; I was one of the many people dissappointed by their absense; but it was so good-it didn't matter on the day.
DeleteSaw U2 with BB King. Little pakeha guy in the middle of a bunch of Highway 51s on the top tier, pass the dutchie and I got wrecked. Amazing time!
Deletedoes anyone remember bananarama as the backing singers for talking heads as well as neatherworld dancing toys first up in chch, i was security at back stage after concert we were invited back to their caravans,we left there at about 0630 in another world great memories.
ReplyDeleteRemember Netherworld Dancing Toys ... no to bananarama. Still have NDT on vinyl lol
DeleteYep, I remember it very well and at 58 years old now, I probably shouldn't:-) I remember Bananarama backing Talking Heads and Annie Lennox singing while the rain came down. I seem to recall that Talking heads wheeled on their bands instruments and pieces as they started going thru their performance. It was really cool. Byrne was charismatic...
ReplyDeleteYip i was there too..talking heads was going through their set..was awesome..then david byrne started his song using a lamp as a dance prop then suddenly the light in the lamp goes out..he stopped disappeared for sec music still playing he came back looking brast off but carried on..also annie lennox singing here comes the rain again as it began to rain..me and my five mates had to sleep in my holden kingswood the whole time..was something ill never forget..plus the guys climbing the cabbage tree challenges..hilarious..
ReplyDeleteI went to Sweetwaters South on 6 February 1984. Astonishing show with so much international talent. Never been to another concert like it. All three headline acts had everyone spellbound by musical brilliance. There with great company - a show permanently etched in my mind.
ReplyDeleteThey where great times. I lived not far from pukekawa site. I was involved in site clean ups. Talking Heads, U2, Pretenders, Cold Chisel, The list was great
